Waking Up Early Is Worth It

Greetings, friends!

It’s been a while. I haven’t posted anything for about a month. But this month has been time well-spent. I was on vacation for part of it. I went to the desert, and didn’t even go near a computer for about five days, which must have broken all sorts of records for me. It made me realize just how addicted to the Internet I’ve become. It made me realize all sorts of things.

Sometimes, you have to make an effort to unplug. I love technology. I love living in a world where there is so much possibility at your fingertips. But sometimes you have to get away from all the voices trying to grab your attention, and just sit quietly somewhere so you can hear your own.

I can’t really remember the last time I did that. So this vacation was really the best one I’ve taken in a long, long time. It was great just listening to the sound of the wind, and nothing else.

Here are a few things I came away from the desert with. I thought I’d share them, since I know that within a few weeks, they’ll evaporate from my memory, as these things tend to do. Maybe if I write them down, they’ll have more longevity. A lot of them are simple notes to myself. But sometimes, I need reminding of them. Maybe a few of them can help you out, too. So here we go:

  • Sometimes, waking up early is really, really worth it.
  • People usually want you to do what they want you to do. Don’t let them convince you that that’s what you want to do too (could I make this any more confusing?)
  • Anytime you do anything creative, there’s going to be haters. It’s the nature of our world, and it always has been. Don’t listen to them. Keep your flame.
  • If you’re passionate about something, and you keep going with it, there’s no way you can lose.
  • It’s better to not have a large breakfast before a hike in 90-degree heat (just finally got this one down).
  • Driving in the desert with the windows rolled down at sunset is heaven on earth.
  • Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. Don’t mess with Mr. In-between.
  • Make an effort to go outside. It’s worth it.
  • In Utah, beer is only 3.4 percent alcohol. Remember that, and bring your own.
  • Sometimes a little sun can solve all of life’s problems.
  • Don’t limit yourself. Have a Scarface mentality.Want the world and everything in it. Just try to avoid being gunned down at your mansion by drug lords later on.
  • Even the greatest soccer players in the world have bad weeks. It’s what you do to move past those kind of weeks that counts.
  • Appreciate others for who they are, and for what they bring to your own life.
  • A good pie is one of the best things in the world.
  • Don’t overthink things. It rarely leads to anything good. Stop while you’re ahead.
  • Stay young at heart. Life is wondrous. Find the things that make you feel that way.
  • I am so lucky to have such a great family.
  • Keep going. Always keep going. Don’t let others stop you, and stay out of your own way.
That’s a lot. Some of those are obvious, but I thought I’d share them anyway. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget. I hope they’ve helped you in someway, and I promise not to be so preachy in my next post. In the next post, we’ll just drink.

Hope you all are having a wonderful Friday out there! Enjoy all of it.

  1. Hi, Allison,
    This post is A-Maze-Ing!
Couldn't agree more with the desert sunsets, pies, and of course, appreciating things. Also, so true about even the best soccer players in the world have bad weeks. Ouch and double ouch on that one...
    Thanks for this GREAT list!
